Jack Grealish punched, Chris Smalling shoved: PFA calls for full inquiry after ugly day for English football
The PFA has expressed its concern and called for a full inquiry after Jack Grealish and Chris Smalling were confronted by pitch invaders on Sunday.Grealish, the Aston Villa captain, was punched from behind at St Andrew’s just hours before an Arsenal fan appeared to shove Manchester United defender Smalling at the Emirates.Both fans were arrested but concerns have been raised as to how easily they were able to access the players.44Grealish went on to hail it the ‘best day of his life’, as he recovered from the incident to score the winner.The fan, named by West Midlands Police as 27-year-old Paul Mitchell, was later charged with invading the pitch and assault.Birmingham confirmed Mitchell would be banned for life from St Andrew’s.Arsenal later pledged the same punishment would be imposed on pitch invader who marred their 2-0 victory over United. Sunday’s incidents came after Rangers captain James Tavernier found himself face to face with a fan on Friday night who had jumped out of the Hibernian support before being led away. In a statement released before the Smalling incident the PFA said: “The PFA condemns in the strongest possible terms the actions of the individual who has encroached on the field of play and attacked Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish.“There needs to be a full inquiry into the incident to ascertain why in a fixture with such a charged history, a fan was able to run onto the pitch virtually unchallenged and assault a player.“The PFA is concerned that we’ve seen elements of this type of behaviour coming back into the game, with several high-profile crowd related issues this season.4“Over the last few decades there has been a great improvement in matchday security, however incidents like this demonstrate certain problems have not been eradicated and that players can be particularly vulnerable.“We must address issues of violence and player safety – this should include continued efforts with regards to education but be underpinned by strong punishments and sanctions.”Grealish scored a 67th-minute winner and later told Sky Sports Football: “(This is the) best day of my life. To come here, captain Aston Villa and score the winner is what dreams are made of, especially for me as a Villa fan.”Sky Sports4Birmingham issued a statement apologising to Grealish while Villa also released their own statement saying: “A red line has been crossed by this cowardly on-field assault on a player, which is unprecedented in English football.”West Midlands Police also confirmed a steward was “spoken to” in the aftermath of the Villa goal after television footage appeared to show him pushing Grealish as the player celebrated but no offence had been reported.

Manchester United scraped past West Ham United at Old Trafford thanks to Paul Pogba and some suspect officiating.The Hammers will leave Old Trafford with their heads held high, but must be wondering how they did not earn at least a point.Paul Pogba tucked home two penalties for the hosts, but the game was shrouded in controversy. The first penalty appeared to be soft, the visitors had a ‘goal’ ruled out for offside and then there was a possible rec card not given to Paul Pogba.4However, the Red Devils hung on and claimed all three points to keep the pressure on their Top Four rivals before Chelsea travel to Liverpool on Sunday.United were looking slightly off the pace in the early stages and were given a let-off when Felipe Anderson rifled high past David De Gea, only to be flagged narrowly offside.Replays showed Diogo Dalot was playing the Brazilian onside when he latched onto former United striker Javier Hernandez’s header.United slowly warmed to the task and were awarded a penalty after Robert Snodgrass scythed into Mata just inside the area – replays showing that too was a controversial call.4Paul Pogba eschewed his usual stuttered run-up routine, instead taking a more conventional approach and slamming past Lukasz Fabianski in the 19th minute.However, fans thought the World Cup winner should have seen red for a high challenge on Snodgrass.As the second half began, West Ham began to look more dangerous thanks to the growing influence of Manuel Lanzini on the left hand side.And the Argentine put in a delightful cross for Felipe Anderson at the back post to grab his tenth of the season.4Sensing the game slipping away from his side, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sent on Marcus Rashford and the England international forced a smart save from Fabianksi.The game became fantastic viewing for the neutral as the pendulum swung from end-to-end, with the introduction of Michail Antonio seemingly putting West Ham in control.The forward made an instant impact, hitting the bar with a left-footed drive before forcing David De Gea into a spectacular save.Two minutes later, it was heartache for the Hammers as Anthony Martial raced through only to be bought down by Ryan Fredericks. As with the first spot-kick, Pogba stepped up and dispatched his second of the game hard to the keepers right.

4Yet again, the England international was superb for the Hammers at the heart of their midfield.Strong in the tackle and good on the ball, he comfortably dominated Pogba and Fred all game and seemed to be everywhere.Manuel Pellegrini will know that, with performances against higher-opposition like this, Rice’s value will continue to skyrocket for interested parties.

The decision to rule out Felipe Anderson’s goal in the first half proved to be the decisive moment at Old Trafford.After Arthur Mausaku’s cross from the left was met by Javier Hernandez, the Mexico international headed the ball back into the path of Anderson.Although replays confirmed West Ham’s record signing was kept ONSIDE by Diogo Dalot, it would have been an incredibly good call for the linesman on the far side to spot.Further evidence that the introduction of VAR cannot come soon enough.
