Manchester United are the greatest club in the world, but need massive rebuild to compete with Manchester City and Liverpool, says Simon Jordan on talkSPORT
Simon Jordan has hailed Manchester United as the greatest football club in the world, but says the Red Devils need a massive rebuild and doubts Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the right man for the job.Speaking to talkSPORT host Jim White ahead of Wednesdays clash against Man City, former Crystal Palace owner Jordan unravelled the enthralling tale of two cities which surrounds this derby showdown Manchester and Liverpool.United face an ironic dilemma: victory over City at Old Trafford would boost their own top-four hopes and put a huge dent in their blue rivals hopes of a second straight Premier League title. But, it could also hand the crown to old foes Liverpool.Victor Lindelof reacts as Liverpool celebrate their win at Anfield in December. United are also looking to halt a run of dreadful form, with Solskjaers men losing six of their last eight matches in all competitions. When the Norwegian was announced as Uniteds permanent manager back in March, Jordan said the club had made an unavoidable mistake.

And the talkSPORT pundit is not convinced the Old Trafford legend will be trusted with the immense overhaul that is needed to compete with their two top rivals.Speaking to Jim White, Jordan said on Wednesday: Manchester United are the greatest football club in the world, but theyve got a massive rebuild here and theyve got two sides to fight now.Do you believe Guardiola and Klopp are better managers than Solskjaer? Yes?Solskjaer and Guardiola go head-to-head in the Manchester derby2
Solskjaer and Guardiola go head-to-head in the Manchester derby
So hes got to overcome three managers who have currently got three better teams, with a group of players that is disparate, dysfunctional and not fit for purpose. Is he really going to have the chops to not only manage himself and learn his trade, but also rebuild this football club within the confines that hes got?He may well get the support, but that support is going to have to be in the 300m/400m bracket, and were going to have to see spending like weve never seen before in English football unleashed by Manchester United this summer.Thats what this football club needs, but are they really going to give it to Solskjaer?I think there is a considerable doubt about it. Ultimately theyve had previous managers in situ that have had far bigger achievements than Solskjaer. Solskjaer is a really decent bloke with a really decent set of credentials, and the first 17 games at Man United were compelling, thats why I gave it the moniker of an unavoidable mistake in terms of the appointment. But it was ridiculous. There was no need to appoint him until the end of the season. There was a need to assess the big picture in all of its entirety, rather than the feel-good factor which besides the win over PSG was pretty much underpinned by games against Huddersfield, Cardiff, Bournemouth and Newcastle.I think these are very testing times for Manchester United.Under various managers through the 70s and 80s, Manchester United disappeared into the ether and then they found a manager Sir Alex Ferguson.Yes, we all know he was given time but there are no Fergusons on the horizon.
